What is MPEG ?
MPEG (pronounced M-peg), which stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, is the name of family of standards used for coding audio-visual information (e.g., movies, video, music) in a digital compressed format.
The major advantage of MPEG compared to other video and audio coding formats is that MPEG files are much smaller for the same quality. This is because MPEG uses very sophisticated compression techniques.
Choosing an MPEG Encoder
MPEG is used for distribution of digital video. Once you know that you want to
begin using MPEG professionally, you will want to make an intelligent choice in
an encoder. That can be quite a confusing task!
Ratings are important, but may not be sufficient for your needs. Each encoder
has features that are different from another. Finding the one that fits your
needs best is a challenge.
The most important things to remember are that you must define: (a) the target
for your output, and (b) the features you need in an encoder. The term ?target?
refers to the output of the process, the actual file itself. It can be an MPEG-1
file or an MPEG-2 file.
If MPEG-1 is desired because of the low bitrates and universal playback
capabilities on PCs, your choice may be dependent on resolution, frame rate,
bitrate and filtering. Are you doing a high bitrate project where you are in
control of playback hardware? Will you widely distribute a CDROM with MPEG
video? Or a Video CD? Maybe you even want to stream MPEG over a network or T-1
lines!
If MPEG-2 is desired because of the higher bitrates and quality, you need to be
aware of half D1 resolution (360 x 480) and full D1 (720 x 480). An encoder may
not do full D1, as the cost difference is significant. An MPEG-2 encoder will
set you back over $10,000. MPEG-2 is primarily for broadcast and DVD
applications.
Next, you must look closely at the way you want to encode. Features of an
encoder are important. For example, some hardware encoders have YUV preview.
That gives you the ability to watch the source on screen. Without YUV preview,
you must have a separate preview monitor.
There are other critical features, as well. Do you need to capture the video and
edit it, prior to encoding to MPEG? Or, is it more important to encode in
real-time to save disk space and time? Perhaps your source is already in AVI or
MOV format and you just need something in software that will encode it to MPEG
inexpensively. Maybe quality is so important that you will need access to a lot
of filters.
Generally, you get what you pay for. The more the encoder costs, the more
features it should have. Higher-end MPEG encoders will usually have very
sophisticated quality filtering, component and digital format input options, and
VTR deck control options.
